Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure aimed at correcting issues related to the eyelids, such as heaviness or fluid filled. The surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, depending on the patient’s needs. The duration of the procedure varies but typically ranges from one to three hours. It can be conducted under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, based on the patient’s preference and the complexity of the surgery.

Post-surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and a sensation of tightness around the eyes. These symptoms are generally manageable with over-the-counter pain medication and usually subside within one to two weeks. Sutures are often removed within a week, and it is crucial to adhere to the post-operative care instructions provided by the medical team. This includes keeping the surgical area clean and avoiding specific activities that could hinder the healing process.

For those interested in eyelid surgery, a consultation at Skin Club Cosmetic Doctors in Melbourne is the first step. During this consultation, our medical team will assess your suitability for the procedure through a detailed medical history review, a physical examination, and a discussion of your objectives. All recommendations are made in line with evidence-based medical guidelines to ensure the best possible outcome.

There is no other medical alternative to blepharoplasty that can reposition or reshape the eyelids.

For excess skin, your plastic surgeons may be able to evaluate you for laser skin resurfacing where a laser is used to gently burn the surface of your skin in a controlled way.

Injecting Anti Wrinkle Injection can also smooth out fine wrinkles.

The cost of the surgery depends on a number of factors such as your plastic surgeons’ level of expertise and the condition of your eyelid. On average, the price for an eyelid surgery ranges from $1800 to $4000.

Prior to the surgery, you need to talk about medical issues with your doctor. They may discuss with you about your:

  • Physical Exam – An examination will help your doctor decide if eyelid surgery blepharoplasty is appropriate.
  • Medical History – Pre-existing medical conditions and surgery you may have had may influence decisions about this treatment including the type of anaesthetic that is used. In particular, you have to tell your surgeon if you have glaucoma, detached retina, any thyroid disorders, etc.
  • Eye Exam – you may need to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist before your surgery.
  • Risks and possible complications – It is important that you understand these so that you can gauge whether blepharoplasty is right for you.
  • Medication – inform your surgeon about any medication that you take regularly or has recently taken, including over-the-counter preparations like fish oils and vitamin supplements.
  • Past reactions to medication – tell your doctor if you have ever had a bad reaction or side effects from any medication including anaesthesia.
  • Preparation for surgery – your surgeon will provide instructions on what you should do at home to prepare for the surgery.

You may have local anaesthesia, sedation, or a general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will inform you which is the best option for you.

The operation differs according to the details of the blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery – your surgeon will make an incision on the natural skin crease just above the eyelid. They will remove any excess skin and fat that is pushing through the muscle.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty – Your surgeon will make a cut along the rim of your eyelashes to just beyond the edge. They will remove any excess skin, and remove or redistribute any fat that is pushing through the muscle.

Recovery will be between 7 to 14 days from the day of surgery.

If you only have upper eyelid blepharoplasty, you should be able to go home after few hours but refrain from participating in strenuous exercise, bend down for the first week, wear eye make-up, and drink alcohol for few weeks, Also keep your face out of the sun.

Eyelid incisions are typically closed with sutures and are generally removed five to 8 days from surgery.

A more defined and rejuvenated eyelid area will slowly show as the swelling and bruising subsides and reveal.

The results of a blepharoplasty can last for five to ten years and sometimes can be permanent. Your face will still continue to age but should look @@@@ than if you did not have the treatment.

Pain is none to moderate. Topical anaesthesia will be applied to lessen the sensation. After your eyelid surgery, you may feel tight and sore. Your eyes may be watery, dry, itchy, or sticky. Your eyes may become sensitive to light and your vision will be blurry for few days.

Just like other plastic surgery, blepharoplasty also has risks and complications which can be serious if not done properly hence it is very important that you see well-trained and certified plastic surgeons.

General Complications

  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection of the surgical area

Specific Complications

  • Too much skin removal
  • Bleeding into your eye socket
  • Blood clots that may cause potentially fatal cardiovascular complications such as heart attack, deep vein thrombosis or stroke
  • Cornea Abrasion
  • Double Vision
  • Cosmetic Problems
  • Risks of anaesthesia, including allergic reaction
  • Eyelid disorders that involve abnormal positioning of the upper eyelids (eyelid ptosis) or loose eyelid skin – these disorders can coexist with sagging forehead and eyebrow structures
  • The development of lumps inside the lower eyelids, which can irritate the surface
  • Further surgery to treat complications.

It is always good to get a consultation from your plastic surgeons about how risks will apply to you and make sure that you understand what is involved in blepharoplasty.

Also, you may undergo blepharoplasty at the same time as another treatment, such as brow lift, face-lift, or skin resurfacing

After surgery, with the guidance of a specialist, general self-care suggestions are as follows

  1. Follow all instructions on looking after your wound. Gently clean your eyelids and use prescribed ointment
  2. Use ice packs on your eyes for 10 minutes every hour the night after surgery. The next day, use ice packs on your eyes four to five times throughout the day.
  3. Expect to have soreness and swelling for few weeks after the surgery
  4. Do not rub your eyes because this may result to a trauma
  5. If you use contact lenses, don’t wear them for two weeks from treatment
  6. Use coolness compression to help manage short term irritation, discomfort, and sensations of dryness
  7. Protect your eyes from sunlight and wind until the healing process is completed. Wear darkly tinted sunglasses.
  8. Sleep with your head raised higher than your chest for few days
  9. For about a week, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen naproxen sodium, naproxen, and other medications or herbal supplements that may increase bleeding. If needed, use acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) to control pain.
  10. Report right away if you experience the following:
  • Vision problem
  • Bleeding
  • An unusual heart rate
  • Severe new eye pain
  • Chest pain
    Shortness of breath

Post-surgical swelling will reduce over time. Many find that blepharoplasty makes a huge difference in their look especially if you had very loose upper lid skin or large bags underneath their eyes. The final outcome will be revealed within several weeks but may take up to a year for cut lines to fully heal. While it can be expected to correct certain conditions permanently, you will continue to experience the effects of aging.
